Microsoft Windows OS is notorious for
being pirated. While the Redmond giant
has offered users of genuine Windows 7
and higher OSes a free upgrade to
Windows 10 for PC, the same offer isn't
valid if your Windows copy is Non-
Genuine or pirated.
"While our free offer to upgrade to
Windows 10 will not apply to Non-
Genuine Windows devices, and as we've
always done, we will continue to offer
Windows 10 to customers running devices
in a Non-Genuine state. In addition, in
partnership with some of our valued OEM
partners, we are planning very attractive
Windows 10 upgrade offers for their
customers running one of their older
devices in a Non-Genuine state," said
Terry Myerson on the Windows blog.
"If you ever encounter this watermark on
a new machine, I encourage you to return
the device immediately to the retailer
from whom you purchased it and request
a Genuine Windows device. Non-Genuine
Windows has a high risk of malware,
fraud, public exposure of your personal
information, and a higher risk for poor
performance or feature malfunctions.
Non-Genuine Windows is not supported
by Microsoft or a trusted partner."
For users who purchased genuine
Windows license from Microsoft's OEM
partners, the company revealed that it is
working to make sure that the upgrade
from Windows 7 or Windows 8, to
Windows 10 will be seamless.
Microsoft's end game is, as it always has
been, to reduce piracy rates. One good
way to do that is to get everyone excited
about Windows 10, let them install the
upgrade even if their current copy of
Windows isn't legit, and then trap them in
a new OS that features anti-piracy
measures that are even harder to
circumvent than the ones in Windows 7 or
Windows 8.
According to the post on Windows Blog,
the Windows 10 Mobile will release after
the launch of Windows 10 for PCs. Some
of the new features include Windows
Store Beta for phones which is the first
new look of the new Windows Store in
Windows 10 for phones.
Microsoft adding goodies to attract more
users Pirated Windows copies make users
vulnerable to the risk of fraud, malware,
and public exposure of personal data.
Microsoft hasn't said which OEMs are
going to offer their customers the chance
to get back on the right track. These deals
may be limited to areas where Windows
piracy is most problematic — places like
China and Brazil — rather than wherever
you happen to reside.
Microsoft announced earlier this month
that Windows 10 will be available in seven
different versions to target different user
groups.
The seven versions include Home, Mobile,
Enterprise, Mobile Enterprise, Pro,
Education, and IoT Core. Windows 10 will
come with the blockbuster game Candy
Crush Saga pre-installed.
