Summer is here, and if news organizations (and the meteorological department) are to be believed, it’s probably going to be one of the hottest ones we’ve ever had.
Of course, we are to be blamed for the increasing temperatures; we have created environmental conditions viable for Global Warming and Climate Change and have successfully continued to ignore the issue, but that’s a debate for another day.
Today, I am not interested in talking about issues pertaining to Global Warming. Rather, I am more focused on how to save yourself from the scorching heat, especially since we now know that summers are going to get hotter and hotter.
Well, every second we’ll be spending in that heat will be agonizing, and if we don’t take care of ourselves, we might even fall victim to a heat stroke.
So, to make sure you get by this summer, here are seven tips you should follow:
1. Dress Cool.
It’s time for you to ditch those skinny denims and go for those straight fits or shorts, otherwise the only thing you’ll be feeling this summer are rashes on your body.
Similarly, wear loose tops, cool summer dresses and light colours that’ll let your skin breathe, but while doing so, make sure you haven't exposed your skin to too much UV rays either!
2. Always carry a bottle of water.
One thing that can drastically affect you this summer is dehydration.
Hence, it’s important for you to carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go. Drinking as much as water as you can has multiple health benefits, not least of which being combating dehydration.
3. Use sunglasses every time you step out of the house.
Sunglasses are like sun-screen for your eyes. A lot of people underemine the importance of a pair of good, cooling eye glasses and often step out of the house without them, even in summers.
But what they don't know is how dangerous this exposure can be to the eyes because harmful rays from the sun can lead to conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration and eye strain. This is one of the best methods to not end up with a headache due to exposure to sunlight.
4. Sunscreen should be your best friend.
Of all the hype and false promises about skin creams being advertised on the television today, at least they're not lying about the importance of sun screen!
Consider sun-screen and sun block creams your aresnal in your battle against the carcinogenic effects of the Ultraviolet rays. They don't just tan you leaving you with skin a shade or two darker.
Remember, if Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) could be affected by the Sun, you're no biggie yourself. Rely on products like skin creams to keep you safe!
5. Avoid alcohol consumption and make juices your best friend for summer.
No matter how much you love your tequila shots or rum and coke, those are not wise options for summer. Alcohol causes dehydration in the body and since summer is all about keeping yourself hydrated, drinking alcohol only beats the whole cause.
Rather, whenever you’re at a party or hitting the club, go for frozen cocktails or fruit based mocktails so you can keep as cool as possible.
6. Make changes to your diet.
What you eat also plays an integral role in helping you beat the heat. Make sure you're eating food that will help you keep hydrated and help you beat the heat.
Add lots of fruits and vegetables to your diet such as oranges, litchis, watermelons, cucumbers and eats lots of yogurt so as to keep the water content of your body high.
7. Try to stay indoors during the afternoon.
As much as you can, try to stay indoors during the afternoon (especially between 12 to 3 PM) because the intensity of the sun's heat is at it's peak during this time.
Summers can get too hot to deal with, so avoid getting out unless you're left with no other option.
And all you nice humans, think about our four legged furry companions and leave some water out for the animals as well and make some space for them to rest too, we aren't the only ones affected by the heat of the sun!
