Magumeri forest is about 150 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Mallam Momodu Bukar, a suspected member of the sect, told journalists on Saturday in Maiduguri that he had to flee the forest on Thursday when it became clear that he could be killed and eaten by his colleagues.
“I'm grateful to Allah that I was able to escape from the forest. Otherwise, I would have been killed and served as meal to my colleagues at the camp by now,” Bukar said.
The suspected militant was captured by a youth vigilante group, popularly known as civilian JTF at Baga road motor park in Maiduguri, on Friday..
According to him, members of the sect had been in the forest following the declaration of emergency rule by President Goodluck Jonathan in May, when they were sacked from Marte in Marte local government area, . by the Joint Task Force (JTF).
“Our group, consisting of about 300 well armed combatants, headed for Magumeri on the orders of the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau, before the military recaptured Marte Camp.
“We have been wandering from one place to another. Our food and water supply has been exhausted. Everyone is hungry and will do anything to survive. ,” Bukar said.
