Big Brother Africa reality television show, after running for 91 days with 28 individuals from 14 African countries, ends today.
The winner of the “golden” chase will go home with $300,000.
The contest sees the participants being decimated week after week. Housemates commonly referred to as Chasemates were evicted from the House every Sunday. Most housemates nominated for eviction silently wished the eviction day never came. They knew their quest for $300,000 would be over if evicted. An incident of particular interest was when Nando was literally chased out for being in a fight with Elikem.
Housemates In Coup plotting
There were series of gang-up by housemates against some members that in most cases were seen as a threat to their continued stay in the contest. And now, the die is cast; there are five housemates in the House who are all potential winners of the reality TV show.
In the past editions, Nigerians had gone home with the grand prize, and the recurring question is whether today will be different, despite having two finalists in Melvin and Beverly.
In 2009, two Nigerians – Nkenna and Kevin – were among the top-five in the show. Kevin won while Nkenna was the first to be asked to leave the Big Brother House on the final day. History repeated itself two years later in Big Brother star game 2011, where Vina and Karen Igho were among the top-five. Expectedly, Karen emerged the winner. This simply means Big Brother and Nigeria are in tandem.
Will another Nigerian win it again this year? Is it Nigerian Beverley Osu, a famous model in Lagos who has been in the eye of the storm for being romantically involved with South African Angelo, or Nigerian Melvin, a Chemistry graduate turned model and actor who has so far behaved well in the House, with no negative news on him, but criticised by fans for being a bore?
Can it be Elikem, who is a tailor and actor, another strong contender?
The Ghanaian will be making a history for his country if he wins today, as he is the first Ghanaian to make it to the finals ever since the inception of the reality TV show, eight years ago.
Namibian Dillish, a Psychology student with passion for seafood, is another hopeful who could be walking away with the star prize today, if Africa votes in her favour. She escaped eviction after being nominated five times.
Zambian Cleo, artist and musician, is a single mum to a daughter and is currently looking for ways to go for further studies. She is the last of the five finalists. She said her proudest achievement is making it into the Big Brother House. If Africa favours her tonight, making it to the House would turn out to be a huge stepping stone for her.
According to the latest polls as at press time, Nigerian representative, Melvin, tops. Melvin leads the pack with 44 per cent, followed by Dillish with 19 per cent. Cleo is third with 17 per cent, closely followed by Elikem with 13 per cent.
